A Grandmother Who Was Always There for Us

My story starts painfully, but it ends on a slightly sweet note. It revolves around my grandmother, who is the kindest person I know. This incredible woman practically raised my siblings and me while our parents were going through a divorce.

I mention this so the reader can understand just how special and loved this wonderful woman is—at least to me. Being the selfless person she is, and not wanting to inconvenience anyone, she decided to surprise us all before her 83rd birthday.

Instead of waiting for us to plan something special for her, my grandmother organized an entire birthday lunch at her house! She prepared everything despite her fragile health. That morning, she woke up at dawn to bake her own bread and pastries.

I found out about the event the same way as everyone else: through the invitations she had sent out a week in advance. Not only had she prepared the food herself, but she had also hand-drawn and written each invitation despite her trembling hands!

An Unforgivable Disappointment

The effort and care my grandmother had put into preparing her special day were more than enough to make me attend. However, on the day of her birthday, work delayed me, and I arrived ten minutes late.

Even though I was running late, I had already bought her a gift and showed up with it in hand. As I walked in, I found my sweet grandmother clearing plates off the table and pouring coffee down the sink.

Confused, I asked:

— Grandma, did I get the time wrong? What happened? Where is everyone?

I tried to keep my voice steady, thinking I had missed the celebration. But with a lump in her throat, my grandmother admitted:

— Sany, you’re not late… No one bothered to show up. But it’s okay, sweetheart. I know everyone is busy.

My heart shattered into a thousand pieces. Seeing her teary eyes and trembling smile as she tried to act like everything was fine… My blood boiled.

EVERYONE HAD PROMISED TO BE THERE! But neither my retired mother, my unemployed brother, nor my sister—who was “between jobs,” whatever that meant—bothered to show up. They had no excuse.

I hugged my grandmother tightly and promised to make it up to her. That’s when a plan started forming in my mind.

A Well-Deserved Lesson

My grandmother didn’t need to know, but for me… this had just become personal! After spending some time with her, I went outside to make some calls.

The first call was to my mother.

— Mom! Where are you? Grandma fell, and I found her alone at home.

Her voice immediately filled with concern.

— What?! What happened?

Keeping up the lie, I responded:

— I don’t know… I arrived late for her birthday and found her lying on the kitchen floor. She’s in the hospital now.

My mother panicked and asked which hospital she was in.

— This wouldn’t have happened if you had bothered to come… — I said coldly.

Guilt washed over her, and without much hesitation, she agreed to send money to help cover my grandmother’s “hospital bills.”

I hung up and called my brother.

— Tim, where are you? Why didn’t you come to Grandma’s birthday lunch?

— Something came up… — he mumbled.

— Something like another gaming marathon? Grandma is in the hospital, Tim! Do you even care?

He went silent for a few seconds before nervously asking:

— Is she going to be okay? What happened?

I brushed him off, saying I was too stressed to explain, but I made sure to guilt-trip him about how this wouldn’t have happened if someone had shown up.

Then I mentioned the hospital bills and how “everyone was contributing.”

— I’ll get some money from a friend — he promised, sounding remorseful.

I did the same with the rest of the family. In no time, I had collected a considerable amount. I reassured them that Grandma was stable but wouldn’t be able to receive visitors until the next day.

The Best Revenge Is Happiness

That night, I stayed at Grandma’s house to keep her company. The next morning, I surprised her with something very special.

— Grandma, pack your bags. We’re going on a trip!

Her eyes widened in shock.

— What? How could you afford this?

I winked at her and smiled mischievously.

— Let’s just say I cashed in a few favors.

We spent a whole week at a beautiful destination she had always wanted to visit. We soaked up the sun, enjoyed the sea, and cherished each other’s company. I made sure she had the birthday celebration she truly deserved.

We took plenty of photos, capturing every moment of joy. Then, I posted them all over social media, tagging every single family member with captions like:

“The best birthday ever!”
“Grandma’s special getaway!”

It didn’t take long for my phone to start blowing up with angry calls and messages.

The first was from my mother.

— But you said the money was for hospital bills!

— And you said you’d come to her lunch… but you didn’t. — I replied calmly before hanging up.

Next, my brother called.

— What the hell, sis? You tricked us!

— And you broke Grandma’s heart. — I shot back before hanging up again.

A Permanent Change

From that day forward, my family never missed another event. They showed up for every birthday, holiday, and Sunday dinner. But they still gave me the cold shoulder for what I did.

Some even tried to make me feel guilty.

Whenever they did, I had one simple response:

— Do you want to discuss this with Grandma?

That usually shut them up. They knew they couldn’t face the truth of what they had done.

And every time I saw my grandmother’s happy face, I knew it had all been worth it.

But deep down, I sometimes wondered: Did I go too far?

What would you have done in my place?
