Johnny Depp, now 61, has taken on the aging process with the same charm and mystique that defined his iconic career. Known for his roles in films like Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sweeney Todd, the two-time winner of People’s Sexiest Man Alive has aged into a distinguished version of his eccentric self, trading youthful edginess for a seasoned elegance that some fans adore.
These days, Depp’s appearance is a blend of rugged features and an unmistakable sense of style that echoes his earlier years. His look tells a story—a journey shaped by a lifetime in the spotlight, hard-fought personal battles, and an enduring passion for his craft. He’s maintained his characteristic sense of style with his signature scarves, rings, and bohemian flair, creating a look that’s all his own.
Despite some ups and downs in recent years, Depp reinvented himself, drawing fans with new projects and collaborations, particularly in music.
His band, Hollywood Vampires, has allowed him to share another side of his artistry, and he’s embraced this chapter wholeheartedly. The artist, actor and musician of today still captivates audiences, proving that age only adds layers to his enigmatic persona.
When in Rome
On October 26, Depp made a memorable appearance at the 19th Rome Film Festival, promoting his latest project, Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. The film also stars Al Pacino, who co-produced while Depp served as director.
“He is a wild fella and he is very creative, and it was fun to work with him. It really was,” Pacino tells People of Depp, who he shares a decades-long relationship.
Modi – based on the Dennis McIntyre play about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani – is the first film headed by the award-winning duo since their first appearance together in the 1997 crime drama Donnie Brasco.
“I’m working with Johnny again, and Johnny and I get together sometimes. And Johnny and I, he would just say, ‘Here we are. A couple of toddlers,” Pacino, 84, tells the outlet. “He’s wild. He’s wonderful.”
While in Rome, Depp received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the film festival, and once again captivated audiences with his signature charisma and wild style.
Dressed in a classic Depp ensemble – a tailored suit accented with his favorite rings and bracelets – he brought his characteristic flair to the red carpet. His look, a mix of classic Hollywood and rocker edge, matched the sophistication of the festival while staying true to his unique style. The star of the Fantastic Beasts franchise took time to greet fans, sign autographs, and pose for photos, showcasing the personable nature that has endeared him to audiences worldwide for decades.
But some fans were quick to draw their criticisms, pointing out that he looks unkempt and is aging poorly.
“Is that even him?” asks one netizen.
“I love Johnny, but please wash your hair,” comments one fan in an Instagram post that shows Depp at the festival. Agreeing with that message, another writes “Considering he doesn’t like to bathe it’s probably grease.”
“Time hasn’t been kind to him, has it?” says a third, while a fourth writes, “He’s the age of a grandfather. It’s unfortunate the last of his best years in Hollywood were taken from him.”
“He’s not aging well,” shares another, a comment that invited several online fans to jump to the actor’s defence.
“He looks great, shut it already with this nonsense,” writes one. A second pens, “he aged very well but people are used to the fake faces with so much plastic surgery, but he doesn’t give a F about that, he is aging naturally and beautifully.”
In fact, many admire Depp’s authentic style, appreciating that he hasn’t resorted to drastic measures to look younger. Instead, he’s leaning into his natural aging process, sporting a grizzled charm that only adds to his allure.
“Beautiful Johnny. How is he 61? So happy and proud of him!!” shares a cyber fan while another jokingly commends his natural aging: “He is aging horribly, good for him.”
