HT7. Man Shares Heartbreaking Final Text Message from Wife on American Airlines Flight 5342

Hamaad Raza, a man grieving the loss of his wife, has shared the last message he received from her before she tragically passed away in an accident involving American Airlines Flight 5342. The flight, traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C., collided with another aircraft and tragically went down into the Potomac River on Wednesday evening.

Raza was anxiously awaiting a message from his wife, who frequently traveled between Wichita and Washington for her job. She had been aboard the flight, as she had done many times before, but this time the outcome was different. As the plane neared its destination, she sent a simple text: “Landing in 20 minutes.” However, when Raza noticed his responses weren’t going through, he feared something was terribly wrong.

“The moment my messages stopped going through, I knew something had happened,” Raza explained, as he recalled the moments before the crash. His wife had always been uneasy about flying, despite her regular travel for work. This particular flight was no different, and she had expressed her anxieties to him before boarding.

A Husband’s Desperation

In a moving interview with WUSA9, Raza spoke of his sorrow and disbelief. “I’m just praying that someone is pulling her out of the water right now,” he said, his voice filled with grief. “That’s all I can do—pray,” he added, clearly struggling to come to terms with the tragic situation.

His hope for her safe recovery was shared by many who followed the rescue efforts closely. However, as the hours passed and no updates came, Raza’s hope began to dwindle. “I keep praying, but deep down, I know things don’t look good. My heart is broken,” he shared.

The crash of Flight 5342 left Raza and others devastated, as it collided with another aircraft mid-flight. Tragically, all passengers and crew on board perished. The flight was carrying 60 passengers, including members of the U.S. Figure Skating team, as well as four crew members. The second aircraft, involved in the collision, was a military helicopter, which also lost all three of its crew members.

Details of the Incident and Rescue Efforts

American Airlines Flight 5342 was traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C., when disaster struck. The collision occurred at approximately 9 p.m., just as the plane was close to its scheduled landing at Washington National Airport. The impact caused the plane to crash into the Potomac River, where both the plane and the helicopter were submerged in the cold, dark waters.

Raza spoke about his wife’s fear of flying, despite her frequent travel. “She was always anxious before each flight, never fully at ease on a plane, and this one was no different,” he said. It was a sentiment shared by many of the passengers on board, as traveling had been a routine part of their lives.

Among the passengers were athletes, coaches, and family members from the U.S. Figure Skating team, who were returning from a training camp held in Wichita. Their tragic loss left a lasting impact on the world of figure skating.

Rescue Operations

In the aftermath of the crash, hundreds of rescue personnel were sent to the Potomac River to search for potential survivors. The operation was carried out under challenging conditions, with approximately 300 rescue workers using boats to search the icy waters. The conditions in the river were described as extremely difficult, with strong winds and floating ice.

John Donnelly, the fire and emergency services chief of Washington, D.C., played a key role in managing the response. He spoke about the challenging conditions his team faced. “The search has been incredibly difficult due to the ice and hazardous conditions,” Donnelly stated. “The teams are working tirelessly to recover any survivors.”

Unfortunately, after several hours of searching, the operation transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery effort. “We regret to inform you that we do not expect to find any survivors from this tragic accident,” Donnelly confirmed.

The news was heartbreaking for Raza and the families of the other victims. “I had hoped for a miracle, but I knew it wasn’t going to end well,” Raza said, his voice heavy with sorrow.
